Brexit or no exit – situation remains unclear
Brexit: The United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the EU on 30 March 2019. While the British government and the opposition argue over a new referendum, more than 15,000 Finnish companies are preparing for a scenario in which Britain leaves the EU without an agreement. If no deal is reached, the UK turns into a so-called third country overnight. In this case, goods entering the EU from the UK are treated as import goods, and goods leaving the EU for the UK are treated as export goods. They will be subject to all EU legislation on imports and exports, and a number of duties and taxes (such as import duties, VAT and excise duty). In addition, the entry of goods and animals into the EU, which are subject to sanitary and phytosanitary rules, will be prohibited from the date of withdrawal unless the UK is added to a list of approved third countries, and this will take time. Despite this inclusion, the UK would need to meet EU third-country import requirements and imported goods would be subject to sanitary and phytosanitary checks at the EU border.
Businesses should prepare for Brexit by applying for the necessary authorisation, licences and certificates in good time.
SA-TU Logistics is making preparations for every scenario and will be ready to assist its customers if the UK becomes a third country on 30 March without any transition period.
